Syphilis is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. While the disease was actually very dangerous in the old years (before antibiotics), it is now being treated with great success and complete cure.

Syphilis is transmitted by sexual intercourse but it is also possible to be transmitted to the fetus by an infected mother (congenital syphilis). Syphilis is not hereditary.

The diagnosis is made by laboratory tests.

Today syphilis treatment is completely effective and fast with the use of mainly penicillin or other antibiotics (in case of allergy to penicillin)
